What is DNS propagation and how long does it take?

DNS propagation is the period during which resolvers and devices refresh cached DNS records after a change. Different networks may show the old and new answer at different times.

Many changes appear within minutes, but allow up to 24–48 hours for caches with longer TTL values or slower resolvers. A nameserver delegation change can also take longer than editing a single record.

While waiting

  • Test from more than one network or device.
  • Check the authoritative nameservers, not only your local cache.
  • Do not repeatedly change the record; each change can restart the wait.
  • Keep the old service available until the new service is confirmed.

If the change is still incorrect after the expected TTL, contact support with the domain, record type, and the time of the change.
