What does it mean to register a domain name?

Registering a domain reserves a unique name in a top-level domain, such as .com, for a defined term. The registrar submits the registration to the domain registry and records the registrant and administrative contacts.

Registration does not automatically include website hosting, email, or a website design. Those services can be hosted separately, but the domain must point to the correct nameservers or DNS records for each service.

Keep the registrant contact email current because it may be used for verification, transfer, and renewal notices.
