What is the domain name system (DNS)?

DNS translates names such as example.com into the addresses and services that computers use. A domain's authoritative nameservers publish its DNS zone.

Common records

  • A/AAAA: point a name to an IPv4 or IPv6 address
  • CNAME: point one hostname to another hostname
  • MX: identify mail servers
  • TXT: store verification and email-authentication data such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
  • NS: delegate a domain or subdomain to nameservers

DNS changes are cached according to TTL values. Edit DNS only where your authoritative nameservers are managed.
